Walsh's Murphy is SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week

CUYAHOGA FALLS -- "It comes natural to me," said Sean Murphy, this week's SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week from Walsh Jesuit High School.  This swimmer was nothing short of amazing last weekend at the University of Akron's Ocasek Natatorium.

Sean, the son of Elaine and Kevin Murphy of Hudson, has had his swimming goals set for some time.  "I wanted to win everything this year. I've had a good year," Murphy said.  "My coach, Wally Lutkus, has kept pushing me and that has made me better."

At the Division II sectionals, this Warrior captain won two individual events, swam on a first-place relay, and competed for a second-place relay as the Warriors won the D-II title.

Murphy started swimming when he was 6 years old in Hudson and decided to try out for the Walsh team as a freshman. "I originally got into swimming to stay in shape."

Murphy, a senior, is headed the U.S. Naval Academy to swim for the Midshipmen and to study engineering.  "I really want to be a Marine, always have," Murphy said.

A member of the National Honor Society, he carries a 3.8 GPA.  "Swim practice is tough so my books are always with me," he said.

Murphy also was a member of the Warrior golf team that almost won districts last fall.  A scratch golfer, he says his strength is his short game.  He consistently defeats his dad on the course.  "I usually give him nine shots on each the front and back," he said with a competitive grin.

"I've always wanted to go to Navy but, before I could, I had to convince my Mom. She is OK with it now," Murphy said.
