The Green girls saw their 20-game win streak come to an end Tuesday night at the Canton Civic Center. State-ranked McKinley got up big early and rode that lead through the second half.

CANTON – The Green girls basketball season ended Tuesday night at the Canton Memorial Civic Center as Canton McKinley ran away with the Division I regional semifinal game 82-53.

The McKinley (22-3) girls rolled a 20-point lead at the half, and didn’t relent in the battle of Bulldogs teams. The loss snapped a 20-game win streak for Green coach Tony Whitmer's squad.

McKinley held Green junior standout Logan Pastor scoreless.

Whitmer said playing at the Civic Center was a challenge for his team. McKinley led 41-21 at the break.

“You have to learn the Civic Center. It's a different place to play, it's a difficult place to play, it's a difficult place to communicate, difficult place to shoot. McKinley's kids were here, won two games last year went to state. It helps.”

Seniors Kelsey Corle, Selana Reale and Deanna Wheeler are disappointed their season ended the way it did, Whitmer said.

“They helped draw a community together and got them excited,” Whitmer said. “They're disappointed that we weren't able to give it a better battle to really let the big crowd be a factor on our side.”

Sydnee Penn led McKinley with 18 points, Laneisha Lennon scored 17, Ameryst Alston scored 11 and Aaliyah Dotson scored 10.

For Green (21-4), senior forward Kelsey Corle led scoring with 12 points, junior forward Melissa Weinsz scored 11, and sophomore guard/forward Lydia Corle and senior guard Reale had nine points each.

McKinley advances to the regional final for the second year in a row.
