BROADVIEW HEIGHTS -- The ride to Columbus for the Revere Minutemen came to a halt Saturday night in the Brecksville Division I District final. Lakewood St. Edward beat the Minutemen 67-46 to advance to the Division I regional at Cleveland State.

A huge third quarter by the Eagles erased a four-point Revere lead at halftime. St. Edward (19-3) outscored the Minutemen 22-9 in the third quarter.

For the first 16 minutes, Revere (19-4) controlled the pace and the tempo of the game.

St. Edward jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first quarter on a basket by Delbert Love and an old-fashioned three-point play by Myles Hamilton.

Then, the Minutemen caught fire. Two baskets by John Galbraith, a layup by Larry Nance Jr. and a three from Dan Steinkerchner gave Revere an 11-5 lead. Love hit a three from behind the arc to momentarily stop the run. But Galbraith and Andy Trem hit back-to-back baskets to increase the Revere lead to 15-8.

The quarter ended with Revere leading 17-12.

The teams battled tooth-and nail in the second quarter. Revere grabbed a 29-22 lead with one minute to go on a 3-pointer by Ryan Wonders. St. Edward answered just before the buzzer sounded with a Love 3-pointer.

At halftime, Revere led by four, 29-25

In the third quarter, Steinkerchner kept the Minutemen ahead with his shooting. His 3-pointer at the 4:49 mark gave Revere its final lead at 36-33.

Then the Eagles found their offense. And the Revere Minutemen couldn’t throw it into the ocean.

Revere head coach Dean Rahas said, “If you’re hitting shots and they’re missing shots, you have a chance to win. But, with St. Ed’s, they have two 6-10 guys (Price and Stainbrook) and you’d better make that first shot because you won’t get a second one.”

Junior Kyle Pisco sank a 3-pointer to tie the game at 36 at the four-minute mark of the period. Consecutive baskets by sophomore guard Myles Hamilton and senior center Matt Stainbrook gave the Eagles a 40-36 lead. Nance briefly stopped the onslaught with a two-point basket. But, St. Edward closed out the period with a 7-0 run to make the score 47-38.

Revere only sank three baskets in the final quarter. Meanwhile, the Minutemen were busy chasing Eagle guards Ryan Angers and Hamilton, who were content to play catch with the basketball near the half-court line. St. Edward put 20 on the scoreboard in the final period, while Revere could manage only eight.

But Rahas was not disappointed in the season. “We won the Suburban League. In the tournament, we beat the Senate Athletic League champions, we beat the Southwestern Conference champions and lost to a team that could make it to Columbus.”
