Walsh Jesuit sophomore Rachel Theriot is a big reason why the Warriors (23-2) will be in Columbus for the state semifinals.
Walsh coach Pete Zaccari plans on keeping Rachel Theriot around for a while.
“I would not trade her for any player in her division in the state,” Zaccari said about this week’s SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week.
Earlier this week, Theriot, a sophomore, was selected third team All-Ohio for Division II. “We are certainly honored that she got selected, but I don’t know if there is a better player in her division,” Zaccari said.
Theriot is averaging 14 points per game, five assists, four rebounds, has 38 3-pointers for the season and is shooting 89 percent from the free-throw line. “I love being able to get out and run on the court and getting the ball to my teammates,” Theriot said.
In an Ontario Regional semifinal against No. 1-ranked Tiffin Columbian, she had 19 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. She followed up that performance with 25 points in a 53-44 regional final win over Rocky River.
Basketball started for her when she was in grade school -- she has three older brothers. “I wanted to play with my brothers,” Theriot said.
This week Walsh is playing in the state championships in Columbus, starting Thursday night against Hathaway Brown. The Warriors stand at 23-2. “I love our team, we all hang out together,” Theriot said.
“It is a dream of mine to play basketball in college,” she said.
“Rachel is a tremendous player who works hard and continues to get better," Zaccari said. “Her ability to pass and score makes her very dangerous for our opponents.”
