This week’s SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week is a new face to local athletics but one I’m sure you will get to know well in the years to come, Our Lady of the Elms sophomore catcher Kaitlin Morse.
In the first two games of the season Morse was 5-for-7 at the plate with two doubles, a triple, a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. “We have potential in this team," Morse said. “I love to hit and I am seeing the ball well right now.”
Being the catcher means the sophomore must command respect on the field as the team’s leader on defense and teacher to the young pitchers. “We have young starters, but I feel we will be good in time,” Morse said.
Her love for the game started at a young age as she played ball with her older brothers and found her way to her Nokona catcher’s glove at the age of 6. “I love to catch as that keeps me involved in the game on every play,” she said.
Morse’s dad, Bill, played softball and she says he has been very instrumental in her development.
“Kaitlin has great potential to lead this team, she has a great attitude,” said Elms athletic director Kim Murray.
The Elms underwent a coaching change this year and there were many questions about the new coach and how the new views would fit in with the current group of players.
“The coaching change was difficult for Kaitlin; she was worried as she is big in continuity but (she) and coach Voss (Frank) have had no problem and he has been a great addition to the school,” Murray said.
Morse’s diamond hero is a good one to patent your style of ball after. “I love the way Derek Jeter plays,” she said. “He plays the game the right way.”
Well, No. 9 for the Elms is quickly showing area softball fans that she knows how to play the game the right way as well.
