CROSS COUNTRY: Woodridge regains two runners

STOW – The Woodridge boys cross country team continued to display its dominance in winning the Stow Bulldog Invitational small school race with just 22 points. Senior Vibushan Sivakumaran needed to kick it into another gear at the end, but edged Independence’s Michael Rusnaczyk at the finish line to win another race with a time of 16:24.

The rest of the Bulldogs were right behind their senior leader with the top six runners all finishing in the top eight. Junior Drake Sulzer (16:32) and senior Jacob Onifer (16:46) placed third and fourth, respectively. Woodridge got good news Saturday when seniors Kyle Cochrun and Jimmy Charles made successful returns from injuries, finishing seventh and eighth overall in just over 17 minutes. Cochrun and Charles were the fifth and sixth runners respectively for the Bulldogs. The Field Falcons and Ravenna Ravens finished third and fourth overall to round out the top local teams.
 
In the big school race, the Walsh Jesuit trio of junior Tony Howkins, sophomore Brian Brennan and junior Matt Krakora all finished within a second of each other to lead the Warriors to the team win. All three were outrun by McQuaid Jesuit (N.Y.) senior Robert Hulbut, but finished second through fourth. Howkins led the pack with a time of 16:26.3, Brennan crossed the line in 16:26.9 and Krakora rounded out the group in 16:27.

Stow-Munroe Falls junior Nick Hall finished sixth in a time of 16:23 to lead the Bulldogs to a second place team finish.
 
The Woodridge girls’ team did much like their male counterparts in winning the girls small school race. Seniors Maria Moore and Morgan Willis paced the pack by nearly 30 seconds to finish first and second individually. Fellow senior Miranda Stockton came in fifth to round out the Bulldog leaders.

Walsh Jesuit freshman Melina Renuart (19:51) and Field junior Destiny Cosentino (20:16) held down the third and fourth place spots. Renuart led the Warriors to a second place finish and Cosentino helped the Falcons come in right behind in third place.
 
Hudson sophomore Caroline Sauers ran the course in 19:06 to win the big schools race and lift the Explorers to the team title as well. Senior Katie Betts and freshman Katlyn Fobean guided the host Stow team to a second place finish with sixth and seventh place individual finishes.

Irish conquer Legends
 
CORTLAND, Ohio - Both the St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish boys and girls teams beat the field at the Legends Meet at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds. Senior Maria Arnone won the individual crown with a time of 18:56 and led four Irish runners who finished in the top eight spots. Juniors Tessa Weigand and Samantha Kirk also had a strong showing, along with sophomore Marissa Rossetti.

St. V-M’s friendly rival, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, finished third in the Division II race with senior Christina Blair finishing second to lead the Royals. Blair was just 10 seconds behind Arnone.
 
Junior Patrick O’Brien’s third place finish in under 17 minutes led the boys squad. Senior Jacob Swords placed seventh with a time of 17:13 and sophomore Mick Iacofano held down the 10th spot with a time of 17:33. The Irish outscored second place Fairview 54-117 in the Division II race.

In Division I, Brunswick, Nordonia and Akron North were amongst the leaders finishing third through fifth respectively. The Blue Devils’ top four runners ran a tight pack, all finishing between 15th and 30th place. Juniors Nathan Geiss, Austin Olshavsky, sophomore Tyler Menear and senior Clay Vild set the pace for Brunswick. Nordonia junior Pat Osborne placed eighth to lead the Knights. Sophomore Anthony Car finished second in a time of 16:54 to lead the Vikings.

Brunswick was the top team in the girls Division I race as well. Junior Selena Pasadyn took the top spot overall with a time of 19:18. Continuing a strong junior class, Alexis Uber and Loren McDaniel finished third and 11th overall.

Bees best at Medina
 
MEDINA, Ohio – The Medina Battling Bees took it to the pack at the Medina County Cross Country Festival, earning a team and individual crown. The Bees boys team were led by a seventh place finish from Kevin Paradise. The second through sixth runners all ran in order from ninth through 13th place to earn Medina the team crown. On the girls’ side, Anna Boyert outran everyone else with a time of 19:01. The championship effort helped the Bees finish second as a team.

In the boys Division II and III race, Rootstown, Buckeye and East Canton finished in order behind champion Claymont. Ryan Gallagher finished second overall to pace Buckeye and Josh Schleappi raced just behind Gallagher to lead East Canton. Rootstown was guided by William Morgan and Bob Flecksteiner, who finished in eighth and ninth places.
