Kent Roosevelt volleyball star Emily Carver is the SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week. She's a big reason why the Rough Riders won the PTC Metro title and earned the first league championship of any kind in volleyball in school history.

This week's winner of the SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week is a senior Kent Roosevelt volleyball standout, middle hitter Emily Carver.

Emily played basketball only until the seventh grade, when she experimented with volleyball. At first, she did not connect, but would soon realize the thrill of the game and now loves volleyball so much she wants to pursue playing in college.

“Hitting is very exciting, but I really took to the sport once I got with the coaches and players here at school,” Emily said.

Emily is also a key player on the Rough Riders girls basketball team, and that sport will always be her first love. But for now, she really gets into the game with the horizontal net.

“I think she is just terrific both on and off the court," Roosevelt volleyball coach Kasey Adelman said. "She excels at hitting, digging and serving. She is just a pleasure to coach.”

The Rough Riders are currently 21-1 on the season and won the Portage Trail Conference Metro Division championship outright by defeating Southeast last Thursday. It is the first league volleyball title of any kind in school history.

Emily's parents, Ken and Charlotte Carver, have a special daughter. She is extremely humble and appreciative of her volleyball team, coaches and teammates.

“The teammates are all my best friends," Emily said. "They are a big reason I love playing the sport.”

Added Adelman, “She is a reserved person off the court, but on the court, she is heard loud and clear. She is just a great person."

Knowing this could be a special year, Emily worked on all aspects of her game over the summer.

“I wanted to work hard in the offseason for me, my coaches and my friends on the team,” she said.

On the season, Emily averages 3.67 kills per game and has a kill percentage of 44 percent. She also has 4.65 blocks per match and 1.55 blocks per game. She has 220 kills on the season and 33 solo blocks.
