A weekly soccer notebook for the Greater Akron area

At SportsInk.com, we have a weekly Fab 15 football poll, so why not forecast district champions for soccer.

Sectional tournaments begin Monday (Oct. 18) with the state finals slated for Nov. 12 & 13 at Columbus Crew Stadium.

Here are my picks to win 2010 district championships:

BRUNSWICK
Div. I Girls- Strongsville
Div. II Girls- St. Vincent-St. Mary
Div. I Boys- Brecksville-Broadview Heights
Div. II Boys- Highland
Div. III Boys- Chippewa
KENT
Div. I Girls- Hudson
Div. II Girls- St. Thomas Aquinas
Div. I Boys- Hudson
Div. II Boys- Marlington
Div. III Boys- CVCA
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS
Div. I Girls- Walsh Jesuit
Div. I Boys- St. Ignatius
Div. II Boys- Walsh Jesuit
YOUNGSTOWN
Div. I Boys- GlenOak

Barring a monumental upset, No. 2 seed Revere (14-2-0) will play at No. 1 seed Highland (13-2-1) on Tuesday, Oct. 26, in a Brunswick Division II Boys District semifinal. Both teams are ranked seventh in the latest OSSCA state poll. Highland won the Sept. 21 regular season meeting 4-1 on its choppy home field.

The winner of that match will host the district final and it’s anybody’s guess which team will come out of the bottom half of that bracket.

A second must-see match will be Strongsville’s girls (14-1-1) playing at No. 1 seed Medina on Wednesday, Oct. 27, assuming the seeds hold through sectional play. Mustangs coach Jon Felton chose to be in the same half of the bracket as the defending state champs. After a 9-0-0 start, the Bees (11-2-3) limped through finish line of the regular season and now have to gather themselves. With All-Ohio quality players in Jillian Graff and goalkeeper Taylor Burke, Medina is a proud and formidable champion.

Burke and Graff were visiting the University of Florida when the Bees lost their season finale to Jackson 2-0. Both are expected to be ready for the playoff run.

It’s hard to believe the Walsh Jesuit girls are five goals better than Brecksville-Broadview Heights, but the Warriors crushed the BBHS 5-0 last week. Coach Dino McIntyre’s Walsh squad seems to be peaking at the right time. Walsh had finishing issues early in the campaign, but those appear to be in the past. The Warriors (12-1-3) outscored their final five opponents by an 18-1 margin.

Walsh would appear to have too much talent to allow Brecksville’s Amanda Sivic (24 goals) to pull the upset.

The Division III CVCA boys (11-3-1) go into the state playoffs riding a string of eight straight wins after a pedestrian 3-3-1 start. Senior Jack Thompson (15 goals, 9 assists) and junior Sachem Wilson (18 goals, 6 assists) are big-time goal scorers and could carry the team to Crew Stadium for a fourth straight year.

The Walsh (13-3-0) boys are a heavy favorite to repeat as University Heights Division III District champions. The Warriors are hoping to find a hot goalkeeper for their playoff run as veteran coach John Kissner has rotated senior Nate Casper and junior Ryan Vellequette most of the season.

The Warriors lost their regular season finale 3-1 at Chagrin Falls.

The Brunswick and Kent District soccer brackets were released earlier on SportsInk.com; however, the University Heights and Youngstown brackets have not been published until now:
