Val Baughman has stepped down as Cloverleaf girls soccer coach after 17 years.
She is the only coach the program has ever known, having guided the first team in 1994.
Baughman's Colts have won three straight Suburban League titles the last three years, compiling a 19-0-2 mark in SL matches.
This year’s team concluded 13-3-2, falling to North Royalton 2-0 in a sectional championship match.
The 2009 Colts finished 17-1-1 and were ranked seventh in the final Division I state poll. Unfortunately, Cloverleaf ran into eventual state champion Medina in the district semifinals and lost a 1-0 heartbreaker in overtime for their only loss.
Cloverleaf also won a Suburban League title in 1998.
Baughman never experienced a losing season and compiled a career mark of 209-64-31.
Super Districting
Outgoing OSSCA president John Johnson of Wadsworth said recently that Super Districting will be back on the table when a soccer presentation is made to the Northeast District Board.
Johnson said one plan calls for two districts to be combined for seeding purposes in an effort to avoid having two power teams meet early in the same district bracket. The goal is to move the strongest teams forward to regional play.
According to Johnson, other districts in Ohio are employing various elements of super districting and he feels the time is right for the Northeast District to follow suit.
“We’re in the process of seriously putting it together,” Johnson said. “Next year is the perfect time because we have to realign.”
The OHSAA collects enrollment data every two years and reconfigures division and district assignments if necessary.
