Recent Woodridge graduate Vibushan Sivakumaran is headed to Raleigh, N.C., and North Carolina State University to compete for the Wolfpack track team.
Woodridge senior Vibushan Sivakumaran is the SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week for Oct. 31-Nov. 6 after leading the Bulldogs to an unprecedented fifth straight Division II boys cross country title.
"V" placed seventh at the state meet last Saturday, clocking a personal-best time of 15:56.5 over the 5,000-meter course at Scioto Downs.
Sivakumaran has twice been named All-Academic Ohio for cross country and track & field and also is an All-Ohio runner at 800 meters and the 4x800 relay.
“I started running in seventh grade to keep in shape for soccer, but then I got the bug for our state championship cross country team, and stayed with it,” he said.
“He is a true leader in every way. He is a quiet, confident leader,” Woodridge cross country coach Jeff Howard said. “His strengths are his speed and his work ethic, and to go along with all of his ability, he is a great student.”
Sivakumaran is a district and regional champion and a top runner on state championship teams.
“I love being a part of this program and I've developed great friends since we are all in this together,” Sivakumaran said.
"V" never thought six years ago he would look at running as a lifetime sport, but he does now. “It just relaxes me and I will keep this up through the years,” he said.
Sivakumaran is a tremendous ambassador of Woodridge High School as he is an accomplished trumpet player and outstanding chemistry student. He carries a 3.77 GPA.
“Not many guys with his weight have his speed, he is a pleasure to watch,” Howard said.
“There is nothing like winning a state title," Sivakumaran said.
