Tyrin Williams was a major contributor in the 11-1 season posted by the Tallmadge football team. The junior rushed for 1,800 yards and averaged almost 7.0 yards per carry.
Tallmadge junior football standout Tyrin Williams is the SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week after rushing for nearly 1,800 yards in 2010 and piling up 257 yards on the ground and two touchdowns in a first-round playoff win over Kent Roosevelt.
“I love being part of this team and community,” said Williams, who averaged 7.0 yards per carry and scored 12 touchdowns for the 11-1 Blue Devils.
“The job that Tyrin has done is amazing, he is a great back, a good person, and his teachers are raving about the job he is now doing in the classroom,” Tallmadge coach Joe Vassalotti said.
Williams lived in Akron and was getting ready to play football for a City Series team when he moved to the Tallmadge school district as an 8th grader. “I was a fullback in Akron but when I came here I quickly became a running back,” he said.
Williams has aspiration of being a starting running back for a major college football team and already has drawn interest from some of the Division I schools in Ohio and beyond.
“My goal at the beginning of the season was 1,000 yards, then I went to 2,000, and I would have already had it if I would have been healthy the entire season,” Williams said.
Williams missed the Week 2 game against Ellet with a bad ankle and has had some huge runs called back because of penalties. “He is a good one, he explodes through the openings,” Vassalotti said.
Williams is also a key member of the Tallmadge wrestling and track teams. He wrestles at 160 pounds and runs the 100 meters and competes in long jump during the spring season.
“I love the heart and soul of this town, I like it here,” Williams said.
