Walsh Jesuit junior Sandra Yu (center) had 18 goals and 17 assists last season in helping to lead the Warriors to state and national girls soccer titles.
Walsh Jesuit sophomore soccer star Sandra Yu is SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week for Nov. 28-Dec. 4 in recognition of her fabulous play in the leading the Warriors to the OHSAA Div. I title and ESPN Rise national championship.
Yu scored two goals in each of the Warriors' final three matches -- the regional final, state semifinal and state final -- and completed the season with 18 goals and 17 assists.
As a freshman at Walsh, Yu played both soccer and basketball, but gave up basketball to focus on her wintertime soccer commitments as a member of the U.S. National Team program.
In calendar year 2010, she competed in the Division II girls basketball state semifinals at Ohio State's Schottenstien Center in March and returned to Columbus and Crew Stadium eight months later to win a state soccer title.
She is the fifth member of her family to attend Walsh Jesuit as older brother Jason, and older sisters, Ashley, Nicole and Cheryl all were Warriors.
"We are all a big family on the team, so winning the state championship was like winning the title with your family," Yu said. "Everyone backs you up, it is a pleasure playing for this team as there is a lot of pride here."
Yu carries an impressive 4.32 GPA and already has made her college choice for in two years when she graduates, but would rather keep that decision to herself for the time being.
