Akron Garfield senior Kevin Brewton is one of three Summit County football stars scheduled to participate in the annual Big 33 Game this Saturday in Hershey, Pa.

Akron Garfield senior football and basketball standout Kevin Brewton is the SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week for Dec. 26-Jan. 1.

Brewton is coming off being named first team All-City on the gridiron and played well last week at the K. Jack Greynolds Memorial Classic when the Golden Rams lost a 55-54 overtime heartbreaker to Nordonia. Brewton, a.k.a. "Mr. Double-Double," had 23 points at the Purple Palace after accounting for 19 points and 12 rebounds against CVCA.

“He is a great kid who is still learning the offensive side of basketball,” said Garfield boys hoops coach Harold Ickes. “He works real hard and is a leader for us in a quiet way.”

“I love basketball and believe me I would rather get a dunk than score a touchdown. I’ve played basketball for as long as I can remember” said Brewton.

Brewton remembers his dad, Kevin, handing him both a football and basketball at an early age. Dad and son worked together on sports hoping one day Kevin would be a “player.”

Brewton is averaging 16 points and 14 rebounds per contest for Ickes and the Golden Rams.

Brewton has cherished his time at Garfield because he loves the school's tradition in athletics, plus his friendships are very solid.

“We do everything together on and off the court, we love being together,” Brewton said.

"Coming off our disappointing football season I was ready for basketball and I was hungry to win with my friends."
