The Touchdown Club of Greater Akron recognized three of the area's top girls golfers at its 69th annual banquet (from left): Stephanie Horvath (Highland), Natalie Goodson (Hudson) and Jessica Porvasnick (Highland).
AKRON, Ohio -- The only girls soccer coach Walsh Jesuit has ever known felt like he was back in school.
When Dino McIntyre was presented Monday night as the Touchdown Club of Greater Akron "Coach of the Year," he recognized one of his former teachers, Mr. Tom Jones, who is a member of the organization's executive committee.
McIntyre recalled being asked to leave the library by Mr. Jones and then kidded that he would be on his best behavior.

Well, Jones was elated when four of McIntyre's outstanding players from the 2010 Walsh national championship team, three of them defenders, were given a rousing ovation after putting forth their best in a season marked by a state-record 19 shutouts.
There can be little doubt the Walsh Jesuit girls stole the show at the 69th annual Fall Sports Banquet of Champions at Guy's Party Centre.
McIntyre's team closed its season (19-1-3) outscoring its final 15 opponents by a 63-1 margin, including 30-0 in seven state playoff games to win the school's fifth OHSAA soccer title.
The Warriors then added their third mythical national championship (2000, 2006, 2010).
"These senior captains pretty much did everything," McIntyre said. "All I had to do was drive to practice and bring the scrimmage vests."
Captains Brianna Kanz and Kelsey Smigel, along with juniors Katie George and Kaylee Semelsberger were honored as Touchdown Club All-Stars. A fifth standout, sophomore Sandra Yu, was unable to attend.
Kanz, a first-team All-Ohioan, having undergone four knee surgeries, was named Touchdown Club Player of the Year.
Two hundred six student-athletes, representing 43 high schools in Summit and Portage Counties, were honored at Monday's banquet. The Touchdown Club also presented special awards for the outstanding athletes and coaches in each sport.
