Green senior guard Chris Witmer, a four-year varsity basketball standout, is SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week for Feb. 6-12.

In back-to-back games in late January against Hudson and Copley, Witmer tallied 17 and 26 points, respectively, including 6-of-7 on 3-point shots against the Indians.

Witmer has excellent size at 6-foot-2 and athleticism in helping to lead the Bulldogs to a 15-3 overall mark and the No. 2 seed in the Copley Division I Sectional/ District. Green has won eight games in a row and 12 of its last 13 after a 3-2 start. Witmer is averaging 12.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.

“Chris is the most talented player I have ever coached, without a doubt,” Green coach Mark Kinsley said. “He brings so much to the team as a player and as a person."

Witmer was the main offensive weapon for the Bulldogs last sesaon and had 27 points in a season-ending district semifinal loss to Akron East.  But things have changed this season for the modest star.

"I’m the type of player who will look for the open man and try to get the ball to him, and then if it's not there, I feel I can hit some shots," Witmer said.

An excellent student, Witmer has received recruiting attention from several NCAA Division III institutions. He lettered as a football player in 2009.

“It has been an adjustment, but we are deeper this year so I don’t need to take as many shots," he said. "That's fine with me. Winning is the goal."

The Bulldogs regulary play a nine-man rotation.

Witmer has been helped through the years by playing in the back yard with his three older brothers and other family members.

“They really helped teach me the game,” he said.
