Our SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week for Mar. 27-Apr. 2 is Alex Ciocca, the fleet-footed senior center fielder for the Green baseball team.
Ciocca leads the Bulldogs with nine RBI and smacked a huge three-run home run to propel Green over Highland. Ciocca is batting .462.
“He is a pleasure to coach and have on our team," Green coach Jon Wallace said. "His example of how to play the game is unique.
“He is a calm leader in the dugout."
Under Ciocca's leadership, Green (6-1) is off to another great start with just one loss in their first seven games. The Bulldogs are defending Suburban League champions.
“I just try to play the game hard and I believe that has rubbed off on the rest of the guys, but it really starts with coach (Wallace) and the program,” Ciocca said.
A first-team All-Suburban League performer last year, Ciocca hit lead off in 2010 but went to the weight room in the off-season and now is more of a run producer in the middle of the lineup.
“We just thought that he could really lengthen our order and he has done just that as he is more than an on-base guy," Wallace said. "He can now drive the ball.”
Ciocca already has two home runs and a double in seven games.
“I did want to get stronger in the off-season, so I worked real hard in the weight room, and I think it is already paying off,” he said.
Ciocca was also productive for the Green football team last fall as a wide receiver and a free safety.
He carries a 3.3 GPA and still is undecided on a college choice, but anticipates a finance major or some course of study related to business.
