St. Vincent-St. Mary baseball roars back to beat Mooney

AKRON, Ohio – The St. Vincent-St. Mary baseball team saved the best for last and won its fifth straight game.
Trailing 7-3, the host Fighting Irish exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning and then made it stand up in gaining their fifth straight win, a 10-8 non-league decision over Youngstown Cardinal Mooney on Thursday.
St. V-M (10-5) got two singles and a run batted in each from Davin Wilcox and Sonny Howard, helping provide the win for Andy Farrell (2-1).
The Irish got just nine hits to 10 for Mooney, but the visitors really hurt themselves by committing six errors.

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio -- In a Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division showdown, the Mustangs (12-1, 7-0 snapped a 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the eighth for the win.
Nolan Schultz was the batting hero for Strongsville with a single, double and one RBI.
Senior RHP Matt Ellenbest took the loss for Medina (15-4, 8-1).
Firestone 11, Ellet 0
AKRON, Ohio -- Senior Joe Cianciola belted a grand slam and the Falcons (10-8, 5-1) pulled even with the Orangemen (7-5, 7-1) in the loss column in the City Series championship race.
Ellet managed just one hit in a 5-inning mercy against Firestone hurler Nate Shaffer. The Orange had five errors.
Green 8, Cloverleaf 2
GREEN, Ohio – Mark Zimmerman pitched a complete-game four-hitter and struck out 11, and helped his own cause by getting two hits, including a double, with two RBI, as the host Bulldogs (12-4, 7-2) rolled to this Suburban League win over the Colts (5-13, 2-9). Seth Curtis had three hits, including two doubles, in the 14-hit Green attack, and Alex Ciocca also had three hits, drove in two runs and stole three bases.
Hudson 6, Mayfield 1
MAYFIELD, Ohio – Senior Zac Edwards scattered six hits and struck out seven as the host Explorers (13-4, 7-1) beat the Wildcats (6-3, 5-3) to clinch at least a share of their first Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division title. The Explorers have two league games left, both against Solon.
Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy 8, Gnadenhutten Indian Valley 6
CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio – The host Royals (9-6, 6-3) rallied with four runs in the sixth inning to erase a 6-4 deficit and hand the Braves a Principals Athletic Conference defeat. Junior David Gray singled four times, scored twice and drove in a run.
Tallmadge 9, Highland 0
TALLMADGE, Ohio – Tucker Linder did it all, throwing a complete-game shutout while getting a two-run homer to aid his own cause as the host Blue Devils raced past the Hornets in Suburban League play. Thomas Hobson also had a solo homer for Tallmadge.
Streetsboro 5, Rootstown 2
ROOTSTOWN Ohio – The visiting Rockets (7-9, 9-3) pounded out 13 hits, including three singles by senior Ryan MacMillan, to get this Portage Trail Conference win over the Rovers (5-3 in the league). Senior Frank Gant doubled twice and drove in two runs for Streetsboro, while junior Tyler Dixon singled twice and senior Ruben Martinez doubled.
Kent Roosevelt 6, Norton 1
KENT, Ohio – Senior Justin Nelson singled four times, scored twice and stole four bases to lead the host Rough Riders to this PTC Metro Division win over the Panthers (3-7, 2-6). Jimmy Keys homered for Norton.
Akron Garfield 14, North 2
AKRON, Ohio – Senior Alex Berry had three hits, including a double, drove in three runs and scored twice, and the Golden Rams (4-9, 4-5) had a 12-0 lead after three innings to beat host North in City Series play. Junior Seth Ferris tripled, drove in two runs and scored twice for Garfield.
Woodridge 15, Waterloo 2
ATWATER TWP., Ohio – The Bulldogs (8-8, 7-3) scored six runs in the first inning en route to rolling past the host Vikings (0-10, 0-9) in a PTC County Division game. Senior Mitch Rowland tripled, doubled twice, scored three runs, drove in two runs and stole a base for Woodridge, and senior Travell Wright tripled, doubled, scored two runs, had two RBI and stole a base.
Crestwood 12, Southeast 2
MANTUA, Ohio – Leading just 3-2 in this PTC Metro Division contest, the host Red Devils (7-8, 4-4) erupted for nine runs in the fifth inning against the Pirates (4-9, 2-6) to abruptly end the game because of the 10-run mercy rule. It halted Crestwood’s three-game losing streak. Junior Tony Sargiovanni had three hits, including a double, and scored a run, and got credit for the win (he’s now 2-1) by giving up four hits and striking out five.
