Austintown, Creston and Independence district updates

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Many local track teams began to punch their tickets to regional championship meets on Wednesday.  Hudson, Twinsburg and Tallmadge all found success on the first day of the Division I Austintown district meet as the Blue Devil and Explorer boys teams are atop the standings through four events.

SportsInk.com competitors swept the top three spots in the pole vault to advance to the Austintown-Fitch Regional next week.  Hudson senior Andrew Lovano, Twinsburg junior Christian Moermond and Tallmadge junior Zack Price all tied for first place with 13-6 efforts, six inches higher than the next highest vaulter.

Senior Kyle Tywon also took a win in the long jump with a leap over 21 feet, beating all other competitors by more than three inches.

Also qualifying for regionals was Hudson’s Jim Smith with a fourth place mark in the discus.  The Explorer and Tiger 4x800 relay teams also will make the trip to Austintown Fitch next week.

On the girls side, Twinsburg’s Essence Bell took second place with a throw of 38-10.75 in the shot put to advance, as did the Hudson and Twinsburg 4x800 relay teams.

Creston Division III District

CRESTON, Ohio – The East Canton team of Chase Shrum, D.J. Hill, Kyle Thompson and Josh Schleappi won the 4x800 relay in a time of 8:36, leading the Hornets to an early third place standing overall.  The Mogadore girls team sits in second place overall through two events at Norwayne High School.  All qualifiers from Creston will advance to the Navarre Fairless Regional.

Independence Division III District

On Tuesday, the Rootstown girls team started their district run with a lot of success.  In both the discus and the long jump, the Rovers qualified two competitors to the Tiffin Regional next week.  Senior Amber Heitzenrater won the discus with a toss of 109 feet and sophomore Dawn Freeland finished just behind that with a toss of 100-5.

In the long jump, junior Ashleigh Pickens leapt to third place with a 15-6 jump and senior Becca Wise landed a jump of 15-3 to take fourth place.

Finally, the Rootstown 4x800 relay team came in with a time of 10:36 to come in third place.
