Seven Division II 4x800-meter relay teams to states

Both St. Vincent-St. Mary 4x800-meter relay teams are headed to the Division II state track meet. The boys -- Sean Poholski, Patrick O'Brien, Ian Walsh and Jacob Swords -- set a Region 6 record on Thursday at Lexington High School.

 

On Wednesday, five 4x800-meter relay teams from the SportsInk.com coverage area qualified for the OHSAA state meet.

In Division I, at Amherst, both teams from Medina and the boys from Revere are headed to Columbus. At Austintown, the Nordonia boys placed second and will advance.

In Division III, the East Canton boys made the grade, competing at Fairless High School.

Well, on Thursday, seven Division II 4x8 relay teams punched their ticket to compete next Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

That brings to 12 the total number of 4x8 teams qualifying for state from the 46 SportsInk.com high schools.

At Lexington, girls 4x8 relay teams from St. Vincent-St. Mary (first, 9:23.95), Woodridge (second, 9:30.15) and CVCA (fourth, 9:35.17) made the cut.

On the boys side, St. V-M (7:46.72) and Woodridge (7:48.71) broke the meet record in placing 1-2.

At Ravenna, the Crestwood girls (9:39.31) and Waterloo girls (9:47.25) placed 2-3 and have extended their seasons.

Here is a list of the team members headed to the Division II state meet in the 4x8:

*St. V-M girls 1. Tessa Weigand, Marissa Rossetti, Annia Mion, Maria Arnone, 9:23.95.

*Woodridge girls 1. Maria Moore, Emelie Moeller, Miranda Stockton, Morgan Willis, 9:30.15.

*CVCA girls 1. Christina Blair, Alexandra Blair, Mallory Myers, Taylor Myers, 9:35.17.

*St. V-M boys 1. Sean Poholski, Patrick O'Brien, Ian Walsh, Jacob Swords, 7:46.72.

*Woodridge boys 1. Jacob Onifer, Jimmy Charles, Vibushan Sivakumaran, Drake Sulzer, 7:48.71.

*Crestwood girls 1. Sammi Vaughan, Abby Soltisz, Tori Chiller, Karlie Lieberth, 9:39.31.

*Waterloo girls 1. Emily Luli, Tabetha Moore, Camille Robb, Annie Wise, 9:47.25.

The St. V-M boys set a Region 6 meet record (7:46.72), after running a Division II state record time of 7:44.44 last week at Orrville. The Woodridge boys also cracked the Region 6 mark of 7:53.00 set in 2002 by Pemberville Eastwood.

Two other athletes at Ravenna -- Southeast long jumper Damian Pennington and Streetsboro shot putter Mercedes Oliver -- also advanced to state.

Pennington's best jump of 21-2 was good for third place. Oliver threw 38 feet, 7 1/2 inches for third as well.

Four additional athletes at Lexington are guaranteed to advance. Manchester high jumper Christina Matheny (first, 5-3), Buckeye discus thrower Matt Wuensch (third, 157-00), St. V-M shot putter Miranda Mondozzi (fourth, 38-05.75) and Walsh Jesuit high jumper Tara Ferris (tie fourth, 5-2) also made the cut.
