Medina golf standout Austin Schreiber is our first SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week for 2011-12. He currently is sporting a 73.4 average.

Our first SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week for 2011-12 is the “Medina Master” on the golf course -- senior Austin Schreiber.

Just last week, Schreiber was a medalist at two different events, runner-up in a third, and had a top-15 showing in a fourth.

Schreiber shot a 71 at Quail Hollow for the Mentor Invitational, a 71 at the Country Club of Ashland. He also shot a 74 at the Medina County Tournament at Bunker Hill to tie for second and fired a 76 at Barrington.

In his six outings so far this year, he has a 73.4 average, including 15 birdies last week.

“My mental game has come right along for me and now I can put the bad shots behind me and move on," Schreiber said. "That is my biggest improvement coming into this season.”

He is on track to become the first golfer in Medina High School history to compete in every match in his four years. He currently has a 0 handicap.

“His swing is terrific from the tee to the green, but his mental approach is what makes him so good,” Medina coach Jeanne Pritchard said.

Schreiber started the game of golf at the age of 4 and played in his first tournament at 12. 

“I followed my parents around the course and just fell in love with the game,” he said.

Gus and Kris Schreiber are athletically-minded parents and that helped their son to excel in his sport. As a youth, Schreiber did play football, baseball and basketball; but his passion for golf was always front and center.

“I loved being out there and taking aim with my club and mind,” he said.

His younger brother, Alec, is a budding basketball player in the Medina system.

“We have been so lucky to have him in our program. He is not only great on the course, but is a great young man as well,” Pritchard said. “He makes all the shots”.

For the record, Schreiber uses a Titleist driver, Titleist woods, and Mizuno irons.

He has made the trip to the state golf tournament the last three years and anticipates a return trip this year. His best finish at the state tournament is 25th as a sophomore.

Schreiber holds the school record with a 69 at the Ashland Tournament last year.
