CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio – Walsh Jesuit’s Michael Marsinek is headed to Ypsilanti, Mich.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior pitcher is expected to sign his letter of intent to play baseball for the Eastern Michigan Eagles of the Mid-American Conference during November’s early signing period.

Marsinek, a left-hander, shut down opposing hitters as a junior with an earned run average of 1.12 and 58 strikeouts in 43 innings. He led coach Chris Kaczmar’s Warriors in those categories as did his eight victories (no losses). He was named First Team All-Ohio and was the Cuyahoga River Baseball Conference Pitcher of the Year for 2011.

Marsinek is the first Walsh Jesuit player from the Class of 2012 to move on to the college level. He will be the 42nd Warrior in the past 16 years to play for an NCAA Division I program.

Eastern Michigan went 37-22 overall and 16-11 against conference opponents last season, good enough for second place in the MAC West standings.

ATHLETIC GENES. While Cuyahoga Valley Christian academy senior Sachem Wilson scored a goal Wednesday night in a 3-2 boys soccer victory over Archbishop Hoban, his cousin, Brock Jones, has been making a name for himself with the Walsh Jesuit football team.

Jones, a junior tailback for the 2-1 Warriors, has 208 yards from scrimmage with four touchdowns. Two of those scores came on pass receptions of 45 and 26 yards from quarterback Nick Wargo.

Wilson, one of the top soccer players in the area, has scored six goals thus far for the 6-1-1 Royals.

NICE LEG.  Having a good field goal kicker can make a huge difference in a team’s football season. Walsh Jesuit knows this well. The Warriors have two wins with a combined margin of victory of three points. Senior kicker Ross Martin, widely considered the best in the state, kicked a field goal in each of those games, including a game-winner in a 27-26 victory over Louisville in Week 1.

Martin is headed to Duke University after graduation.

ELMS ON A ROLL. Our Lady of the Elms’ volleyball team swept the Chippewa quad match last Saturday in Doylestown.

The Panthers, led by Aubrey Kozer, Wendy Kuzmishin, Laura Scroggins, Ali Rogers, Gabby Charley and Mara Esber, never lost a game in matches against Mapleton, Woodridge and host Chippewa.

Elms goes into Thursday’s match with a 6-1 record.

IRISH RUN TO TITLES. St. Vincent-St. Mary’s boys and girls cross country teams are off to a fast start (pun intended).

Earlier this month both teams took team titles at the Dave Clegg Invitational. Previously the St. V-M girls won the GlenOak Golden Eagle Invitational.

Leading the way thus far for the girls: seniors Samantha Kirk and Tessa Weigand, juniors Amanda Sollenberger and Marissa Rossetti, and sophomore Julia Mendiola. For the boys, it’s been seniors Patrick O’Brien, Mike Huley and Sean Poholski, and juniors Matt Oswald and Mike Iacofano.

FOOTBALL SCHEDULE. Two area private schools play games at home Friday, as St. Vincent-St. Mary hosts Euclid, and CVCA welcomes Tuslaw. Archbishop Hoban goes on the road against Bishop Hartley (Columbus). Walsh Jesuit does not play this week.
