St. Vincent-St. Mary senior quarterback Kevin Besser has signed with NCAA Division II Walsh University in North Canton. Eight local football stars have signed with the Cavaliers.

St. Vincent-St. Mary senior quarterback Kevin Besser is the SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week for Sept. 11-17.

In a 56-14 win over Euclid, Besser accounted for six touchdowns as the Irish moved to 4-0 and solidified their top ranking in the SportsInk.com Fab 15.

As a junior, Besser was at the controls when St. V-M extended its season to Week 12 and so far this year he's thrown 13 touchdown passes against 1 interception for a total of 929 yards.

In Week 3, against St. John’s College, he also threw four touchdowns as the Irish rolled up 39 points in the win.

“I feel really confident right now, it took off after the win over Mooney last year," Besser said. "I then felt I could play with anyone."

Coach Dan Boarman can't understand why some area colleges have not "jumped on him" in terms of recruitment.

“I will make a statement right now that he is the best quarterback in the area," Boarman said.

This Friday, the Irish meet their longtime rival Archbishop Hoban at InfoCision Stadium, and the irony for Besser is that he originally wanted to go to Hoban.

“My sister went to Hoban and I thought I would go, but I really liked it here and the team -- it has been a great fit for me,” Besser said.

The Besser family resides in Tallmadge; however, Kevin was born in Akron and lived in Cuyahoga Falls during his youth.

“I worked on my mechanics during the offseason and spent a lot of time in the weight room,” he said. Besser gained 18 pounds getting ready for his senior year.

“He is fast, smart, and has a good arm," Boarman said. "He is really everything you look for in a quarterback and a person."
