Archbishop Hoban's girls, Copley's boys and Medina's girls were among the top seeds at the annual Brunswick soccer district seed meetings on Sunday.
BRUNSWICK, Ohio – Never let it be said the Brunswick District soccer seed meetings are boring.
A year ago, Revere boys coach Sandor Jakab picked in the same half of the bracket as No. 1 seed Highland and the Minutemen would eventually win 4-3 in Granger Township en route to a second-place showing in the Division II state tournament.
Also last year, in Division I girls, No. 2 seed Strongsville, hoping to host the district title match, went after No. 1 seed Medina and defeated the Bees in the semifinals 4-1 before blanking Holy Name 2-0 in the championship match.
First-year Wadsworth coach Paul Williford is expecting to do the same in 2011 when the second-seeded Grizzlies girls soccer squad (11-2-0) opted on Sunday for the top of the bracket and a likely district semifinal date with No. 1 seed Medina (7-2-3).
Didn’t the Bees win a state championship in 2009?
No. 3 seed Copley (7-5-3), No. 4 Wooster (10-2-2) and Highland (9-3-2) are only too happy to let the top two seeds fight it out in their half of the bracket.
Wooster and Highland rate as sleepers in this bracket. Wooster has allowed just 10 goals in 14 matches.
Marquee players abound in Brunswick Division I girls where Medina holdovers from ’09 include: Jen Jankowski, Ali Kovarik and Beth Lang. Wadsworth’s dynamic duo of senior midfielder Jessie Gearhart and sophomore striker Leah Runkle (school record 27 goals), Highland record setter Olivia Petek (23 goals) and Copley senior Sasha Haverchak (14 goals, 2 assists) are among the high-profile players in this bracket.
Another senior to watch is Kiersten Shifferly (13 goals, 4 assists) of Barberton.
Nationally ranked Strongsville and dynamo Ashley Meier were switched out of Brunswick and none of the remaining coaches were sad to see the Mustangs leave.
The Brunswick D-I District has been a meat grinder in recent years, usually 16 teams strong, and was at its peak in 2009 with state-ranked teams in Cloverleaf, Medina and Strongsville all jammed into a postseason nightmare for opposing coaches.
Still strong in 2011, but with 11 teams, this bracket is not quite as top heavy.
Top 4 seeds: 1- Medina, 2- Wadsworth, 3- Copley, 4-Wooster
Additional SportsInk.com entries: Firestone, Akron Garfield, Barberton, Cloverleaf, Brunswick, Highland, Ellet.

In Brunswick Division II girls, Archbishop Hoban (7-3-3), having played a tough schedule, is the heavy favorite to raise a district championship banner.
Opposite No. 1 seed Hoban in the lower half of the bracket, SportsInk.com is projecting No. 3 Norton (8-6-0) to host No. 2 Manchester (10-2-2) in a district semifinal. Norton beat Manchester 2-1 on Sept. 26.
Top 4 seeds: 1- Archbishop Hoban, 2- Manchester, 3- Norton, 4- Northwest
Additional SportsInk.com entries: Coventry, Field, Tallmadge.

Since the return of senior captain Brad Ruhaak, the Copley Indians (10-2-4) are on an 11-match unbeaten streak (9-0-2). Coach David Antal’s team is the No. 1 seed, having yielded just five goals since Ruhaak rejoined the team after a back injury.
Junior Riley Grant (12 goals, 7 assists), senior Tanner Manfull (5 goals, 6 assists) and freshman Skye Harter (5 goals, 4 assists) are the team’s primary offensive catalysts.
Senior goalkeeper Kirby Rice has been steady as expected.
The other heavyweight in this bracket is Medina (9-1-6), the No. 2 seed, with a gaudy 45-to-13 goals scored-to-goals allowed ratio.
Brunswick (6-7-2) and Firestone (7-3-5) are the third and fourth seeds, respectively.
Top 4 seeds: 1- Copley, 2- Medina, 3- Brunswick, 4- Firestone
Additional SportsInk.com entries: Barberton, Wadsworth, Akron Garfield, Cuyahoga Falls, Cloverleaf, Highland, Ellet.

Few onlookers are picking PTC Metro champion Coventry (9-2-3, 6-1) to win the Brunswick Division II playoff; however, the Comets have a dominant player in senior Eric Ashley (27 goals).
The Comets are seeded fourth, trailing No. 1 Marlington, No. 2 Triway and No. 3 Alliance. Coventry has wins recently over Kent Roosevelt and Field to sew up the PTC. A match this Saturday at Hoban may indicate whether or not the Comets have enough firepower to capture a district championship.
Tough to get a read on Manchester (9-4-1) as the Panthers play 12 matches in the PAC-7 and just four non-conference games (Alliance, Canton Central Catholic, Kidron Central Christian and Northwestern). Manchester is 2-1-1 out of its league and Bryan Daily (16 goals, 2 assists) is the team's top scorer.
Top 4 seeds: 1- Marlington, 2- Triway, 3- Alliance, 4- Coventry
Additional SportsInk.com entries: Manchester, Springfield.
