Barberton's Eric Hummel, here against Akron North's Sumit Subba, scored a goal to help the Magics beat the Vikings 3-1.
AKRON, Ohio – The Barberton boys soccer team picked up its 10th win of the season Saturday, defeating host Akron North 3-1.
Junior Scott Sabol scored a goal and added an assist for the Magics (10-2-4). Junior Troy Brummond and senior Eric Hummel also scored for Barberton, which outshot the Vikings 4-1.
Sophomore Phurba Tamang scored for North (7-7-0). Lin Kyaw Naing assisted on Tamang’s goal.
ST. VINCENT-ST. MARY 3, SYLVANIA NORTHVIEW 2. At Green Street Stadium, the Fighting Irish won their 10th match of the season in a physical contest against the visiting Wildcats.
Seven yellow cards were called against both teams (five against Northview) in a game that had a “playoff feel” according to St. V-M coach John Stavros.
Antonio Manfut, Corey Bryant and Riley Jones each scored for St. V-M (10-2-4), while Manfut and Robby Dambrot had assists.
The Irish’s first goal was by Manfut from about 20 yards out off a pass from Dambrot in the first half. About four minutes later, Manfut played a ball to Jones on the right midfield, and Jones had enough spin on his shot to curve the ball between the Northview keeper and the crossbar. Stavros likened the goal to a “chip shot in golf” that just found its way for the score.
Perhaps St. V-M’s most impressive goal of the night came with 10 minutes left in the first half when Jones received a pass and placed the ball through just in front of the Northview goal for a sprinting Bryant to easily put the shot in the net. St. V-M led 3-1 at the half.
Northview’s goals were scored by Alan Scharfenburg and Nate Bartlett.
St. V-M senior John Friess did not play, as Stavros took Saturday’s match to let his goalkeeper rest prior to the playoffs which begin Thursday for St. V-M. The Irish will host the winner of Woodridge and Buckeye.
MANCHESTER 6, TUSLAW 0. At New Franklin, Brad Elmond scored three goals to lead the Panthers (11-4-1). Also in the scorebook for coach Scott Carpenter's side were Cody Collins with two goals and Bryan Elmond with one. Manchester outshot Tuslaw 18-0.
