Sophomore Kiley May and St. Vincent-St. Mary advanced to the Tallmadge Div. II District semifinals with a 3-0 win over Canton South on Thursday night.
TALLMADGE, Ohio – On a volleyball team replete with height and touting the No. 1 seed in the Tallmadge Division II District, it would be easy to overlook the contribution of Field senior setter Jayme Mosley.
Not Field coach Brenda Ward. She knows full well what she has in Mosley.
“She’s quiet and unsung, but she’s leading our team, and without those sets we would never be where we are,” Ward said about Mosley.
The Falcons (17-7, 10-4 PTC Metro) play a 6-2 alignment, and Mosley’s court time is reduced in situations to enable Ward to use another tall frontline player. That is a major contributing factor in Field’s success.
During a lopsided 25-10, 25-2, 25-6 sectional win Thursday night over Akron East, Mosley had 17 service points, including eight aces. A gifted back-row setter, she also doled out nine assists.
“She holds it together and she gets our offense moving,” Ward said.
Kent Roosevelt (19-4, 13-1), which has advanced to the Stow Division I District semifinals, won the Portage Trail Metro championship, but lost to Field.
The Rough Riders feature a dynamic duo in junior outside hitter Alli Cudworth and sophomore middle hitter Cortnee Bowser; however, they were neutralized earlier this season by Field’s senior-dominated squad.
“We have seven seniors with experience, and our defense has come along beautifully,” Ward said. “I’m just really happy that things have jelled.”
The Falcons will meet St. Vincent-St. Mary, a 3-0 winner over Canton South, in a district semifinal match on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 5:30 at Tallmadge HS.
The Irish fell behind 5-2 in the first game and 11-7 in the second game, but had no problem stopping South, 25-15, 25-19, 25-18.
A year ago, South knocked St. V-M out in the district semifinal round. The Irish returned the favor.
Sophomore Jordan Korinek blasted 12 kills and 13 service points, and junior Amanda Burke had five blocks as the Irish recovered from slow starts for impressive wins.
Senior setter Paige Gump had 18 helpers, and senior Corie Nischt 12 digs for first-year St. V-M coach Julie Laury.
At Salem HS in Division III:
EAST PALESTINE 3, WATERLOO 2. At Salem, the Bulldogs (18-4) upset Ohio's seventh-ranked team and the tourney's No. 2 seed Waterloo (21-2) in a sectional final on Thursday night.
The Youngstown Vindicator reported that Ashley Morris had 35 kills, 23 blocks and 10 service points for East Palestine.
EP prevailed 24-26, 25-23, 25-18, 15-25, 15-13. Three SportsInk.com squads, Mogadore, Rootstown and Waterloo, have been knocked out of the Salem Div. III bracket.
