Girls rule as area athletes roll to state cross country meet

Led by a dominating overall performance by the girls in regional races, SportsInk.com area schools have plenty of athletes advancing to the Division II and Division III state cross country meets.

TIFFIN DIVISION II REGIONAL

GIRLS

Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy freshman Samantha Bockoven outpaced the field by 38 seconds on her way to winning the regional championship with a time of 18:43.

At the end of the day, area runners took nine of the top 16 places.

St. Vincent-St. Mary junior Marissa Rossetti was second behind Bockoven at 19:21.

Two more St. V-M runners, sophomore Julia Mendiola (19:36) and senior Tessa Weigand (19:37), placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Fighting Irish  decisively won the team title with 39 points. CVCA was second with 70 points, followed by third-place Woodridge (134 points).

CVCA senior Sarah MacIntosh (6th, 19:40) and St. V-M junior Amanda Sollenberger (9th, 19:52) rounded out the area finishers in the top 10

Other area runners  making the top 16 and advancing to next week’s state meet were: Crestwood sophomore Abby Soltisz (13th, 19:59.46), and Field seniors Destiny Cosentino (14th, 19:59.61) and Kaitlyn Stayer (15th, 20:00).

BOYS

The area’s best finish was from St.V-M senior Patrick O’Brien who ran the course in 16:14 and placed fourth.

Woodridge senior Drake Sulzer was fifth at 16:23. Ryan Gallagher, a junior from Buckeye, ran a 16:31 and placed seventh. Other area runners in the top 16 were: Tallmadge sophomore Patrick Ferguson (9th, 16:39), St. V-M junior Mick Iacofano (11th, 16:44), Woodridge junior Matthew Wojcik (14th, 16:45) and St. V-M senior Mike Hurley (16th, 16:48).

The Fighting Irish won the team title with 80 points. Woodridge was second with 116 points. CVCA earned a trip to the state meet with a fourth-place team finish with 124 points.

BOARDMAN DIVISION II REGIONAL

GIRLS

Southeast junior Katelyn McCullough led area runners with an eighth-place finish in 20:56. She was one of three Pirates runners to place in the top 16 and advance to state.

Freshman Miranda Hughes was 13th at 21:03.20, and junior Quinn Sparks ran a 21:03.88 to finish 14th.
