Mentor is the final Northeast Ohio Conference football team left standing in the OHSAA state playoffs. The Cardinals will battle perennial pigskin power Cleveland St. Ignatius in the Division I regional semifinals Saturday at Lakewood Stadium.
It’s all up to the Mentor Cardinals if the Northeast Ohio Conference is going to win a state championship in football in 2011.
Mentor is the 18-team league’s sole survivor in the OHSAA Division I playoffs after knocking off fellow NOC Valley Division co-champion Solon 42-40 at Parma’s Byers Field.
Hudson, which captured the NOC River Division crown, saw its fantastic season end with a 42-21 loss to Wadsworth at Canton’s Fawcett Stadium.
Those results mean the Cardinals (11-1) will carry the flag for the 18-team superconference Saturday when they meet Cleveland St. Ignatius (10-2) in a regional final at Lakewood Stadium. Nine weeks ago, Mentor beat the Wildcats 38-24.
In Week 12, Mentor was far from its best in beating the Comets for the second time this fall -- nearly blowing all of a 35-7 lead on the hard, artificial turf surface next to Parmatown Mall.
Coach Steve Trivisonno’s squad also did not play good defense for the third straight game, allowing a season-high 40 points to raise its average over that stretch to a ghastly 31.3 points allowed.
Cardinals junior quarterback Mitch Trubisky typified his team’s shaky all-around outing by scoring six touchdowns and making six turnovers.
Trubisky went 16-of-33 passing for 279 yards and four scores, while rushing for 121 yards and two touchdowns on 27 attempts. He also was intercepted five times and lost one fumble.
Three of Trubisky’s TD passes went to junior wide receiver Cameron Kavan, while three of his interceptions were caught by Solon cornerback Justin Kresevic.
Comets signalcaller Pat Kramer found the end zone three times in a 205-yard passing performance, including an 11-yard score to Cory Stuart late in the fourth quarter.
That cut Mentor’s lead to 42-40, which is where it stayed as Solon failed on its potential game-tying two-point conversion when Kramer was hurried into throwing a bad pass in the direction of Nick Davidson.
Comets running back Khoury Crenshaw added 101 yards on the ground with a TD, while Kresevic added a pick-six on the other side of the ball.
The Cardinals also got a pivotal blocked extra point by linebacker Kurt Laseak with 10:01 left in regulation. He rejected Alex Knight’s try, allowing Mentor to maintain an eight-point advantage at 42-34.
