Walsh Jesuit sophomore setter Kyra Coundourides, who led the Warriors to the OHSAA Tournament state semifinals, was named second-team All-Ohio in Division I. A total of 10 local players were recognized in voting by the OHSVCA.
FAIRBORN, Ohio -- Walsh Jesuit sophomore Kyra Coundourides was the driving force behind the Warriors' run to the OHSAA Tournament state semifinals.
As a result, the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association rewarded the second-year setter with All-Ohio second-team honors in Division I.
Coundourides, a Brunswick resident, handed out 219 assists in Walsh Jesuit's six-match postseason run. The Warriors captured the Stow District and Hudson Regional championships before falling to undefeated Toledo St. Ursula in the state final four at Wright State University.
Stow senior setter Kelly Vitt was a third-team All-Ohio selection -- and represented District 3 at the State Senior All-Star Match in Wooster. In the Stow District final, Coundourides had 59 assists to Vitt's 48 as Walsh Jesuit won a five-game dandy.
Four players from the SportsInk.com coverage area earned honorable mention status in Division I, topped by Medina senior outside hitter Ally Peters, who led the Bees to the Norwalk Regional semifinals. The three-year letterwinner finished with the second-most kills in Medina County history, setting the career record for big-school players.
Kent Roosevelt junior outside hitter Alli Cudworth, the Portage Trail Conference Metro Division Player of the Year, compiled 430 kills on the year. She had 43 against Crestwood in the match that clinched the Rough Riders the division crown.
Wadsworth senior middle hitter Rachel Jones, who powered the Grizzlies to the Barberton District final, and Ellet junior setter Christie Klinginsmith rounded out the quartet.
Peters was second and Jones was third (behind Vitt) in district balloting for the one local spot in the State Senior All-Star Match.
Honorable mention choices in Division II were Southeast junior outside hitter Alana Woodard of Southeast, who won the PTC County Division Player of the Year award, Streetsboro junior middle hitter Lexi Brewster, and Field senior middle hitter Emily Mortimer.
Waterloo junior middle hitter Megan Forney was the lone local honoree in Division III, also nabbing honorable mention.
