Junior Ben Gedeon (left) led the Hudson Explorers to a 10-win season and a trip to the OHSAA Division I state football playoffs. Hudson featured the third-best defense and the sixth-best offense in the Northeast Ohio Conference this season.

Mentor’s football team was the class of the Northeast Ohio Conference in its debut season in the 18-school league.

Though the Cardinals bowed out of the OHSAA Division I state playoffs in the regional finals, losing to Cleveland St. Ignatius 23-17 at Lakewood Stadium, coach Steve Trivisonno’s squad certainly lived up to its preseason billing.

Mentor also claimed the NOC’s offensive title by averaging a gaudy 41.0 points per game. Fellow postseason qualifier Solon was second at 36.8, while Elyria finished third at 35.4.

A non-playoff team surprisingly posted the NOC’s top defensive average as Lakewood’s 13.9 points allowed put it slightly ahead of Solon at 14.3. The league’s third and final postseason squad, Hudson, was third at 15.5.
