SULLIVAN TWP – Black River will have to wait even longer for its first win. Mapleton pulled away for a 41-30 win Monday as the Pirates were outscored 18-8 in the fourth quarter in a non-league game.
The Pirates (0-6), who were led by junior Savanna Slone with 13 points, hung tough for three quarters but could not find the answer for the Mounties zone defense, scoring only 12 points in the second half.
“We were playing a good game until the fourth quarter and then the wheels just came off,” Black River coach Ken Deidrick said. “We came out trying to be aggressive on the offensive end, but when they came out in a zone we had a hard time moving the ball around and getting good shots.”
The teams exchanged the lead 13 times, but after the Mounties took a 25-24 lead on a pair of free throws by Allison Frymier with 6:05 to play they would never again trail while improving their record to 4-1.
Frymier, a 5-foot-7 junior post, led Mapleton with a game high 17 points.
Black River will be back in action Wednesday for a Patriot Athletic Conference showdown with Brookside. The Pirates have lost their last two league games by one point each.
