Walsh Jesuit athletes -- junior Danielle Margheret (100 breaststroke) and freshman Kailey Francetic (1-meter diving) -- won championships at the 37th annual Viking Invitational at Cleveland State's Busbey Natatorium on Saturday.

Summit County high school divers made an impression last Saturday at the 37th annual Viking Invitational at Cleveland State’s Busbey Natatorium.

Walsh Jesuit freshman Kailey Francetic won the girls 1-meter event, accumulating 392.30 points. Cuyahoga Falls sophomore Nicole Rozsa placed second (364.75).

Rozsa is following in the footsteps of the Black Tigers’ 2011 OHSAA state champion Haleigh Bartlett now diving for Ohio University.

On the boys side, Nordonia sophomore Stephen Romanik won the 1-meter competition (470.15) by 60 points over the next closest diver.

More Viking

As strong as Summit County was in diving, the same could not be said for the swimming events.

Walsh Jesuit's defending state champion Danielle Margheret, a junior, won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.91). The Warriors’ 200 medley relay team placed third (1:52.43) with the team of Kassandra Pawuk, Lauren Tullis, Danielle Margheret and freshman Alyssa Heller.

Medina sophomore Tim Varrelmann in the 500 freestyle (4:59.51) provided the best finish among SportsInk.com boys swimmers with a seventh place.

Canton Christmas Meet

Lost in Firestone junior Katie Miller’s brilliant performance at C.T. Branin Natatorium was Copley freshman Madison Myers’ terrific showing.

Myers claimed second in the 200 individual medley (2:08.78) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.91).

“You come to these big meets and the kids drop their times because of the competition level,” said Copley coach Ed Burnsed immediately after the preliminaries. “People swim faster in the evening.”

Burnsed was exactly right.  Myers had been clocked at 2:14.78 in the IM prelim and 1:10.57 in the breaststroke prelim.

Revere senior Maggie Harris had a big meet as well, capturing second in the 50 freestyle (25.24) and fourth in the 100 free (54.98).

Firestone junior Mark Belanger was strong as well with second place in the 100 backstroke (53.39) and third in the 200 free (1:46.09).

Wadsworth senior Mike Pavlak came up big with two thirds, going under 2:00 in the 200 IM (1:59.54) and clocking 1:01.14 in the 100 breaststroke.  Pavlak was ninth in the breaststroke a year ago.

Miller was a winner in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.99) and 100 butterfly (55.26). She also swam a leg on Firestone relays which placed second (200 medley, 1:50.43) and third (400 free, 3:36.04).

High School Heisman

Last Wednesday, on a night when Brunswick’s swimming & diving program recognized senior Selena Pasadyn for winning the Wendy’s High School Heisman, the Blue Devils swam past visiting Cuyahoga Falls 111-72 in a girls NOC dual meet.

The Black Tigers won the boys dual meet 112-66.

Pasadyn, who holds or shares five Brunswick swimming records, received the award Friday night in New York City.

She was one of 12 national finalists for an award based on academic and athletic achievement, as well as community activity. Pasadyn is the female recipient. She also served as captain of the Blue Devils’ cross country team which won the 2011 OHSAA Division I state title.

Against Falls, Pasadyn won four events (200-yard IM, 200 freestyle relay, 100 breaststroke, 400 free relay) and the Blue Devils won nine of 12 events.

Pasadyn was clocked at 2:22.55 in the 200 IM and 1:17.49 in the breaststroke.
