Senior Charnae Coleman led Kenmore with 15 points, but the Cardinals lost to North Canton Hoover 48-47 Wednesday night.
AKRON, Ohio – Free-throw shooting can often be the difference between winning and losing.
The Kenmore Cardinals girls basketball team found this out the hard way Wednesday night in a 48-47 loss to North Canton Hoover.
The Cardinals shot a dismal 9-of-21 (43 percent) from the free-throw line, while Hoover did much better, hitting 17-of-27 (63 percent).
Kenmore (6-2) was led by senior Charnae Coleman, who scored 15 points. Junior Porshae Hearn added 13 points, and senior Alexis Lee scored 11.
Kelsey Peare led Hoover with 17 points.
The road doesn’t get easier for Kenmore as the Cardinals host Cleveland East Tech on Saturday, and then an Akron City Series showdown at Firestone looms on Monday.
RAVENNA 64, FIELD 39. At Ravenna, senior Malorie Gibson and sophomore Justina Fortson each scored 15 points to lead the way for the unbeaten Ravens.
Ravenna (10-0, 6-0 Portage Trail Conference) also benefitted from 11 points and 10 rebounds from senior DiAndra Gibson.
Junior Morgan Peachey led Field (5-4, 3-3) with nine points. Senior Jacqueline Ricketson and freshman Camille Adelman each put up seven points for the Falcons.
Ravenna led 22-7 after one quarter and 41-21 at the half.
CANTON SOUTH 65, BARBERTON 56. At Canton, senior Megan Jerome, sophomore Kelsey Wilson and freshman Heather Sykes each scored 11 points in the loss for the Magics (4-6). Jerome led Barberton with nine rebounds.
Canton South (2-8) was led by three players in double figures: Katie Uminsici (17 points), Hunra Hams (17) and Joelle Martin (16).
CUYAHOGA FALLS 47, VALLEY FORGE 38. At Parma, the Black Tigers improved to 5-2 with the victory.
Senior Logen Breehl led the way for Falls with 18 points, followed by senior Calli Neumann, who put in 12 points.
Hannah Long scored 14 points for Valley Forge (5-3), while Colleen Huberty and Sandra Zlojutro each had 11.
OUR LADY OF THE ELMS 49, ST. PETER CHANEL 25. At Bedford, the Panthers jumped to a 24-2 lead and cruised to victory.
Elms coach Heather Giel said it was good to get an early lead and ride the momentum.
“It was nice to let some of the younger kids play,” Giel said. “It was nice to see some more scorers.”
Senior Tessa Haneline led Elms with 16 points, while sophomore Racel Coury scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Panthers (6-4).
Jessica Frew scored nine points for Elms.
MANCHESTER 69, TIMKEN 40. At Canton, Manchester grabbed a 17-5 lead early and then outscored the opposition 36-20 in the second half to earn the lopsided victory.
Seven players scored for the Panthers, led by junior Angela Durgala, who scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers.
Sophomore Kayci Krzynowek also hit four 3-point shots and finished with 16 points for Manchester. Senior Michelle Noble dropped in 12 for the Panthers.
SOLON 89, MENTOR 53. At Solon, senior Jaime Gluesing scored 28 points, and junior Martha Thompson put up 25 as the Comets rolled.
Sophomore Kristen Confroy (13 points) and freshman Jordan Bekelja (10 points) also put up double-digit scoring efforts for Solon (6-2, 3-1).
TRIWAY 50, CUYAHOGA VALLEY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 45. At Cuyahoga Falls, senior Cassie Wilson scored 10 points in the loss for the Royals.
Sophomore Ashley Tyna scored eight points for CVCA (6-3).
WATERLOO 60, MOGADORE 51. At Atwater, junior Jamie Willis led all scorers with a 28-point performance for the Vikings in the victory over the Wildcats.
Senior Dani Brannon dropped in 18 points for Waterloo.
Mogadore was led by sophomore Ashley Barker’s 18 points. Sophomore Naomi Pollock had 14 points, and freshman Grace Reilly scored 11 for the Wildcats.
