Garrettsville Garfield senior basketball and bowling standout Cody Berg is the SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week for Jan. 29-Feb. 4.

Berg is averaging 20 points and six assists per game for the G-Men and also competes on the school's championship bowling team.

"It is a little difficult but it makes it nice that my dad owns the bowling alley so I can go down after basketball practice and get a few frames in," Berg said.  "The two sports are very different, but I really enjoy both."

Berg rolled a 620 series and finished 13th in the state bowling championships last season. He earned Honorable Mention All-State honors in both basketball and bowling.

"He is a great kid and leader. He works hard to improve every aspect of his game and life," said Garfield basketball coach Andrew Olesky.

Berg is also an all-star baseball player for the G-Men and recently signed a letter of intent to play third base for Lourdes University in Sylvania, Ohio.

"I love baseball. I guess I love sports," Berg said.

He is a First Team All-Portage Trail Conference selection.

Berg started playing basketball in 5th grade and soon realized the sport was for him and wanted to take it as far as he could.  Bowling has always been in the family, and baseball is the true love.

"He really worked hard on rebounding and defense in the offseason and it is showing," Olesky said.

"I knew I could score, but for this team to win I had to do better at other aspects of basketball," Berg said.

Berg averaged 22.0 points per game as a junior.

"I've always had quickness and the ability to dribble, but now I feel I'm a more complete player," he said.

Berg carries a 3.4 GPA and looks to get into childhood education after college.

"I love kids and I would love to be a coach," he said
