The Ravenna Record Courier is reporting that Waterloo boys basketball coach and athletic director John Herchek is on paid administrative leave.

Herchek's assistant for the last 18 seasons, Jason Wise, directed the team Tuesday night to a home victory over Rittman.

The Record Courier has surmised the suspension is related to the Vikings' boys basketball loss last Friday at Rootstown. The team now is 3-13.

Waterloo superintendent Andrew Hill could offer few details while still gathering information.

Herchek is a Waterloo graduate and in the midst of his 33rd year coaching the Vikings. His teams have a composite record of 388-329, including five conference championships.

Herchek retired from the Waterloo district three years ago and is under supplemental contract.
