Archbishop Hoban senior point guard Janaya Feaster scored 23 points, leading the Knights to an 80-25 victory over the Beaumont Blue Streaks on Saturday afternoon.
AKRON, Ohio – Archbishop Hoban’s Janaya Feaster saved her best performance of the season for her final game at Barry Gymnasium. The 5-foot-5 senior point guard scored 23 points, leading the Knights to an 80-25 victory over the Beaumont Blue Streaks on Saturday afternoon.
Hoban coach Scott Callaghan had nothing but praise for his senior leader following the game.
“I keep telling people that Janaya is the heart and soul of Hoban basketball,” Callaghan said. “She leads by example. Her talent speaks for itself. And she plays harder than anyone on the floor.”
Feaster doesn’t shy away from her leadership role.
“I’m a senior,” she said. “And I’ve worked very hard my freshman, sophomore and junior years and I deserve it. It’s an honor to be on this team this year.”
In the first three-and-a-half minutes of the first period, Feaster set the tone for the game with five-straight points. One of those baskets was off a steal. The free throw came when she was fouled driving to the basket. At the end of her scoring run, Feaster and Hoban had a 7-3 lead. The Knights ran off another nine points in a row, putting the Blue Streaks behind the eight ball.
“This was Janaya’s last game in Barry Gymnasium,” Callaghan said. ”She and the other seniors have invested a lot and deserved to be honored.”
Known for defensive ability as well, Feaster saved her best for the fourth quarter when she scored nine points in the final period. Feaster had a steal and a basket for two points, a 3-point play the old-fashioned way and a 4-point play when she was fouled while hitting a shot from behind the arc.
“We came out strong and ready to play this afternoon,” Feaster said.
The Knights are ranked eighth in the latest Division II state poll and got a wake-up call earlier this month when they lost to Firestone, 44-39, in overtime.
“You don’t want to learn from losing,” Callaghan said. “But, it refocused our team and refocused us as a coaching staff. Our kids have practiced well since then. I thought we played with a lot of pride and confidence tonight.”
Feaster said the Knights may be peaking at the right time.
“We want it more now,” she said. “We want to go far in the tournament,” Feaster said.
But, the senior point guard said the team's goal is to get a share of the North Coast League championship. The team that is one game ahead of them is rival Walsh Jesuit. The two teams meet Wednesday night at Walsh in the final regular season game.
“All of our focus right now is playing for a league championship,” Callaghan said.
