HUDSON, Ohio – The Twinsburg girls basketball team has one regular-season game yet to play, but the Tigers locked up the Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division on Saturday with a 73-42 victory over Hudson.
Four players scored double digits, and the Tigers improved to 16-3 overall and 9-0 in the conference. Twinsburg closes the regular season Wednesday (Feb. 15) at Strongsville before the postseason begins and the Tigers begin their quest to repeat as Division I state champions.
Junior guard Ashley Morrissette led Twinsburg with 21 points. Senior Malina Howard, who this week was named to the McDonald’s All-American game, scored 17. Seniors Leah Fechko and LaShawna Gatewood chipped in 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
Twinsburg is the No. 1 seed in the Akron Ellet Division I District and will face Youngstown Boardman on Feb. 22. The Tigers have not lost to an Ohio high school opponent since Canton McKinley in the 2010 regional final. All three of Twinsburg’s losses this season have been to out-of-state opponents.
Hudson (15-4, 5-4) was led by junior Hannah Boesinger’s 14 points. Senior Laura Mummey scored 10 points for the Explorers, who will play Nordonia on Feb. 18 at Ellet. Hudson is the No. 2 seed.
WADSWORTH 57, BERLIN HILAND 45. At Wadsworth, the Grizzlies played their final game in the West Gym and anticipate a new facility next season.
The No. 1 seed for the Medina Division I District, Wadsworth (16-3) took a 17-4 lead after the first quarter and led 27-26 at the half. A 21-5 surge in the third quarter gave the Grizzlies a comfortable lead.
Senior Kara Long put up 19 points to pace Wadsworth. Junior Rachel Goddard added 10, and senior Jessie Gearhart chipped in nine.
Hiland drops to 11-8.
RAVENNA 84, WATERLOO 41. At Ravenna, the state-ranked Ravens improved to 19-0 with an easy win over the Vikings.
Junior Moniqua Smith and senior Malorie Gibson each scored 17 points to help propel Ravenna to the victory, which included a 54-23 advantage in the second half.
Senior DiAndra Gibson posted a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for Ravenna, whose Portage Trail Conference Metro Division record remained 13-0 as the game was a cross-over PTC matchup with the County Division Vikings.
Jamie Willis led Waterloo (9-10) with 22 points.
WOODRIDGE 62, LAKE CENTER CHRISTIAN 51. At Hartville, the Bulldogs stayed unbeaten with the win over Lake Center Christian.
Senior guard She’kiera Brooks and junior Lizzie Wilkinson scored 18 points apiece to lead Woodridge (19-0). Freshman Morgan Thompson dropped in 16 points.
A 21-9 third quarter in favor of the Bulldogs was the difference in the game.
MEDINA 51, BRUNSWICK 35. At Brunswick, senior Erin Pacholski scored 17 points to lead the Bees (15-4, 8-1).
Junior Sarah Kinch added nine points in the victory for Medina.
Brunswick junior Gabbie Bulic put up 15 points to lead the Blue Devils.
CRESTWOOD 62, SOUTHEAST 45. At Ravenna, the Red Devils used a 26-8 second quarter to take a commanding lead.
Crestwood’s Dannise Johnson led all scorers with 19 points. Rachel Vaught hit four 3-pointers on her way to 14 points for the Red Devils (10-8). Allison Vannoy scored 12 points.
Southeast (10-8) was led by Shayna White’s 16 points. Sophomore Brittany Butcher contributed 14.
GREEN 63, FAIRLESS 31. At Navarre, the Bulldogs (13-5) led 19-3 after the first quarter and 34-7 at the half.
Senior Lydai Corle had 21 points for Green, followed by freshman Julia Guyton and junior Erika Rector, who scored 13 points and 11 points, respectively.
HIGHLAND 77, BEREA 33. At Granger Township, senior Olivia Petek scored a career-high 30 points to lead the Hornets to the lopsided victory over Berea (3-17).
Highland (13-6) took a commanding lead early with a 20-2 run in the first eight minutes.
Senior Karissa Steffas chipped in 11 points for the Hornets, while junior AnnMarie Kirchner dropped in nine points.
Berea’s Kyla Paster scored 19 to lead her team.
MARLINGTON 68, FIELD 42. At Marlboro Township, despite a double-double from senior Emily Mortimer (16 points, 12 rebounds), the Falcons couldn’t match up with host Marlington.
Senior Jacqueline Ricketson added 10 points and six rebounds for Field (10-9).
Marlington improved to 15-4.
REVERE 62, BARBERTON 50. At Barberton, senior Maria Pantich scored 23 points to lead the Minutemen past the host Magics.
Junior Gabby Vitez added 13 points for Revere (6-13), and junior Abby Klein scored 10.
Barberton (7-12) was led by Katie Wright’s 11 points. Magics senior Megan Jerome missed a double-double by just one rebound, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds. Senior Jessie Frost also scored 10 points.
SOLON 80, MENTOR 42. At Mentor, the visiting Comets used a 27-8 fourth quarter to slam the door on a victory over the host Cardinals.
Senior Jaime Gluesing erupted for 28 points to lead the way for Solon (16-2), while junior teammate Martha Thompson also broke the 20-point mark with 21 points.
Mentor drops to 6-11.
STOW-MUNROE FALLS 60, STRONGSVILLE 53. At Stow, the Bulldogs took an early lead and then withstood a fourth-quarter rally from Strongsville to seal the victory.
Senior Alex Shaver was the leading scorer for Stow-Munroe Falls, tallying 18 points. Senior Lexi Stefanov added 11 points, and sophomore Danielle Tiller 10 for the Bulldogs (12-7).
Strongsville (4-15) was led by sophomore Carli Stefanik’s 15 points.
BLACK RIVER 58, BUCKEYE 57. At Sullivan Township, the Pirates trailed 32-30 after three quarters before outscoring the visiting Bucks 28-25 to win the game.
Kayla Finkel scored 17 points to lead Black River. Jessica Chidsey contributed 16 points, and Savanna Slone had 11.
Buckeye was led by junior Jessica Banas’ 18 points, while Sara Dash added 14 points.
