The Greater Akron Area Touchdown Club has announced its fall honorees for top high school athletes and coaches in Summit and Portage counties. A banquet to recognize those individuals and teams is Monday, Jan. 11, at Guy’s Party Center, 500 E. Waterloo Drive.
Players of the Year
The 2009 football Players of the Year are Aaron Maslowski of Highland and Anthony Kelly of Woodridge.
In volleyball, Allison Foschia of Walsh Jesuit and Brittany Woodard of Southeast are Players of the Year.
In girls golf, the honor goes to Ariel McNair of Walsh Jesuit; in boys golf, Cody Nickson of Stow-Munroe Falls is this year’s Player of the Year.
In girls singles tennis, Christine Coffman of Firestone is this year’s Player of the Year.
Boys cross country honors go to Kyle Wheeler of Green and girls winner Christina Blair of the Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy.
In boys soccer, Jack Thompson of the Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy is Player of the Year; in girls soccer, the honors are shared by Juliana Libertin of Archbishop Hoban and Kelsey Smigel of Walsh Jesuit.

Girls soccer: Val Baughman (Cloverleaf)
Volleyball, Portage County: Bill Smerglia (Streetsboro); Summit County: Scott Carter (Stow) and Jim Vaughn (Cloverleaf) share honors.
Teams to be honored include Woodridge boys cross country Division II state champions and the St. Vincent-St. Mary High girls cross country Division II state champions.
The club will also honor a team from Portage County and one from Summit County with the Jim Sovacool Sportsmanship Award for displaying the most sportsmanship during the fall season.
