"She is going to be the best female athlete to ever come through Firestone," said Firestone swim coach Cindy Virdo. Those are high praises for this week's SportsInk.com's Athlete of the Week, Katie Miller.
"The practices are tough but I love the meets and being with the team," Miller said.
Miller in the fall won the big 8 Meet in Canton in the 200-yard individual medley, and with that win many have started to recognize the talents of this 14-year-old swimmer.
Katie Miller and her family moved to the Akron area when she was 8 years old and that is when her life started to take her to the pools.
"I started swimming when we moved here from Strongsville and right then and there I knew I wanted to swim for medals," Miller said. She also competes in the 100 butterfly, 500 freestyle and in the relay competition for Firestone. "Last year I looked up to Breanna McCain and I noticed how much work it took to win," Miller said. She says she swims 12 months a year but she does take three weeks off to rest.
With all the practice time ( 5 hours a day), shet still carries a 3.9 GPA and is looking to get into photography when she heads off to a campus near you. "Our team is really tight," Miller said. "We love being together, we are a family."
"She is not afraid of anyone in the pool and is willing to race whoever wants to take her on," Virdo said.
Arlene and Frank (Katie's parents) better get ready for some heavy-duty travel as this freshmen sensation has set her goals high. "I want to make it to the Olympic Trials, that is my goal," Miller said. With the way she is taking on all comers as a ninth-grader, the Millers better have a full tank of gas ready for this young woman, who is excelling in her own "tank," the pool.
