Tyler Ferrell breaks Brunswick's career scoring record

Tyler Ferrell (right) is now Brunswick's career scoring leader, while fellow forward Kyle Payne broke the school's single-game mark earlier this season. The Blue Devils return to action Wednesday in the Grafton Midview Division I District semifinals.

EATON TWP. -- There is no longer any mystery involved with Brunswick's all-time leading scorer in boys basketball.

Tyler Ferrell eclipsed the school record -- both the actual mark and the disputed figure -- by scoring 26 points Saturday during the Blue Devils' 77-38 thrashing of Lorain Admiral King at the Grafton Midview Division I Sectional.

The 6-foot-7 senior forward took over the top spot in the third quarter against the Admirals by splitting a pair of free throws. Brunswick's previous record holder was Tom Beeching, who scored 1,121 during his career that ended in 1965-1966.

Ferrell finished the evening with 1,128 points, moving into 13th place in Medina County history in the process.

Prior to last month, it had been believed that the Blue Devils' mark was 1,123 by Todd Grabowski, who graduated in 1988.

However, a game-by-game examination of Grabowski's career by prep sports historian Albert Grindle revealed that he actually only scored 1,116 points.

Brunswick's season-ending statistics from that era and the school's official boxscores also added to 1,116, which prompted two people who were involved with the program to admit that the record was manipulated to "find" seven more points.

Fortunately for Brunswick's past, present and future, Ferrell made the entire issue irrelevant by blowing past Beeching and Grabowski while leading the Blue Devils into the Midview District semifinals. They will play Avon Lake on Wednesday at 8:15 p.m., following the 6 p.m. matchup between Medina and Amherst Steele.

The district championship game is Saturday at 7 p.m. The Bees were voted the tournament's No. 1 seed, while Brunswick is No. 2, the Shoremen are No. 4, and the Comets are 13th.
