Wadsworth sophomore Nick Tavanello (215) provided the state-title clinching win for the Grizzlies with his 6-4 decision over Kyle Rose of Centerville at the OHSAA State Wrestling Finals.

Wadsworth sophomore Nick Tavanello, who secured the school's first Ohio high school wrestling state title since 1942, with a 6-4 decision over Kyle Rose of Centerville in the state finals, is this week's SportsInk.com Athlete of the Week.

Tavanello is selected for the 7-day period from March 5-11.

The race for the Division I team title was hotly contested and Wadsworth and Lakewood St. Edward were running neck and neck, with half a point separating the two rivals.

The Grizzlies needed at least one win in their final two championship bouts to capture the team title and unseat St. Edward after 13 years as the No. 1 large school in Ohio.

Tavanello, at 215 pounds, was to be followed by heavyweight Ben Buzzelli. "Tav" ended the suspense with a late takedown and then kept Rose from scoring late in the third period.

The Grizzlies outcored St. Ed's 172.0-167.5.

Tavanello's 2009-10 record, including an individual state championship, is 47-2.
