Medina wins D-I regional semi, St. V-M loses in D-II

BAY VILLAGE --- The Medina Bees used three second-half goals to defeat Westlake 3-0 in a Division I girls regional soccer semifinal Wednesday night at Bay High School

The fourth-ranked Bees (17-1-2) advance to play Sylvania Northview in the regional final Saturday at noon in Ashland. Westlake closed its season at 15-2-3.

"It took us a while to get settled coming off a big, emotional win (on Saturday over Strongsville)," Medina coach Doug Coreno said. "It also was our first game on artificial turf since August."

Senior Becca Candler, sophomore Beth Lang, and sophomore Jen Jankowski scored goals for the Bees.

Candler, bound for Indiana University, has had a sensational postseason run, scoring a golden goal to defeat Cloverleaf, adding a goal and an assist to topple Strongsville, and scoring the first tally against Westlake.

"At halftime, the message was, 'Stay composed and keep playing your game.' We never really panic. The kids do a great job of staying focused," Coreno said.

Junior goalkeeper Taylor Burke continues her shutout string in the playoffs. The Bees have outscored five tournament opponents by a 20-0 margin.

The Fighting Irish (15-3-3) yielded one shot in the second half, but it was costly. St. V-M led 1-0 with six minutes left in the Division II regional semifinal when senior Samantha Davenport shot the ball right to left past Irish goalkeeper Adrienne Henterly and tied the score 1-1.

Davenport struck again four minutes into the first overtime, scoring the golden goal on an assist from Kendra Vehorn.  It was Davenport's 21st goal of the season and it ended St. V-M's campaign. St. Mary's Memorial is 16-4-1 and headed to the next round.

Coach Rob Young's Irish took a 1-0 lead in the first half after Erica Hutson put away a corner kick from Miranda Yeaton. Yeaton has finished the season with 13 goals and 11 assists (37 points).

Young took over a team which won four matches last season (4-7-5) and dropped a second-round playoff game. This year's squad had reeled off four sectional and district wins and was ranked sixth in the final Division II poll.

It was 37 degrees at game time and a steady rain came down for at least half the match.
