HUBBARD -- Five turnovers proved to be the downfall for Buckeye's football team in the first round of the OHSAA state football playoffs.
Hubbard quarterback Matt Shelton passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more as the Eagles parlayed Buckeye's giveaways into a 30-14 victory on Friday night, moving the Eagles into the round of 16 in Division III.
"There are two cardinal sins that you can't make: turnovers and penalties," Bucks coach Billy Burke said.
Unfortunately, Buckeye committed both of them against its higher-seeded host.
With the score tied at 14-14 in the second quarter, the Bucks had a 70-yard touchdown called back because of a holding penalty. They didn't score on that drive, nor ever again, as the Eagles accounted for all 16 of the game's second-half points.
Mike Kelly paced Buckeye with 96 rushing yards on 19 carries, including a touchdown. He added two receptions for 59 yards with the club's other TD.
Austin Friel took over as the Bucks' quarterback and went 3-of-8 for 67 yards.
Shelton (22-of-33, 210 yards, 2 TD, 0 interceptions) was exceptional as Hubbard outgained Buckeye 294-206. The Eagles' top running back was Blake Novotny (76 yards), while Kurtis Drummond (10 catches, 96 yards) and Tommy Jackson (8 catches, 52 yards, 1 TD) led them in receiving.
