Girard's football team eliminated CVCA in the first round of the OHSAA playoffs. The Indians face Woodridge in Week 12 at Lake Blue Streaks Stadium in Stark County.
HARTVILLE -- The Woodridge Bulldogs are 9-2 on the season after their opening round OHSAA Tournament victory over Martins Ferry, 49-28.
Now, the “Dogs” need all of that offense and more as they tangle with the Girard Indians in round two of the state football playoffs Saturday at 7 p.m. Girard whipped CVCA last week 42-7.
“They are going to throw the football 85 percent of the time and we must be prepared for that,” said Woodridge coach Eric Ervin. “But we like our offense as well with (Anthony) Westren and Anthony Kelly.”
Kelly has run for 1,648 yards with an average of 8.6 per carry and has scored 21 touchdowns. Westren has thrown for 2,326 yards with 29 touchdowns.
Girard can throw the football, as well, as their fine junior quarterback Adam Charles has thrown 25 touchdowns and 2,371 yards. His favorite target is Landon Smith, who has 44 receptions for 1,102 yards and a 25.1 average per catch.
“We knew we had something special this year coming into the season so this year has not been surprising for us,” explained Ervin.
So as you can see, it looks like a “last man standing” type of game and one that will certainly be entertaining. The game takes place at Lake High School in Uniontown.
