HARTVILLE -- Poland Seminary scored 10 fourth-quarter points and came from behind to knock out Archbishop Hoban 10-7 in a Division III, Region 9 semifinal football game Friday night at Lake High School.
"We just made too many mistakes in key situations and it really hurt us," Hoban coach Ralph Orsini lamented. "You go through 11 games and Game 12 with no blocked kicks, and the very last punt is blocked and that was kind of disheartening."
With the scored tied 7-7 with 1:38 to play, Poland junior Anthony Machi came through and got a piece of Zach Christensen's punt. The ball traveled 10 yards and the Bulldogs took possession at the Hoban 47 with 1:30 on the clock.
Sophomore quarterback Colin Reardon threw back to senior running back Luke Wollet, who rumbled 13 yards giving Poland a first down at the Knights 34 yard line.
Reardon then connected with speedy junior wide out Darius Patton for 29 yards to the 5. After two plays resulted in no gain, Poland coach Mark Brunguard sent his kicker, Ryan Filicky, onto the field for a 22-yard field goal attempt with 19.6 seconds left.
Filicky, who had missed a short field goal just before halftime, redeemed himself with a perfect, end-over-end kick for three points.
"I was pretty disappointed after the first one," Filicky said. Maybe it was good he stayed on the field and performed the halftime show with the Poland marching band. "I messed up the (trumpet) solo a little bit, but it still was good. After a while, you just get over it. I really wanted another shot."
After the kickoff, Hoban had possession on its 36 with 10.5 seconds left and was unable to get in Christensen's range for a tying field goal attempt.
"I knew it was going to be low scoring," Brungard said. "You've got to kick well, you've got to defend, and you can't turn it over. We did just enough."
Hoban (8-4) had struggled mightily on offense during a 14-11 win over Padua in the regional quarterfinal. The Knights appeared to be in sync when they marched 85 yards in 12 plays during the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead. Junior quarterback Dan Hinton connected with senior wide receiver Ben Coudriet on a 13-yard scoring pass, but the Knights finished the contest with nine first downs and 149 yards of offense.
Hoban's lack of produtivity in the second half, coupled with poor field position, put pressure on its defense time and again.
The Bulldogs (10-2) took advantage of a short field, drove 53 yards and tied the game with 10:04 to play on a fourth-down, one-yard plunge by Wollet.
"He wants the ball and I wouldn't want him any other way," said Brungard about Wollet.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder finished with 90 yards rushing on 23 carries and 41 yards receiving. Patton had 122 receiving yards on seven receptions plus an interception.
"We knew it was going to be a defensive struggle," Wollet said. "We could have put up more points, but we have to learn to finish, especially next week."
Poland will meet top seed Cardinal Mooney for the Region 9 title.
"I love this team. I love coaching them. And I'm excited we have another week to be together," said Brungard, a former national championship quarterback for Jim Tressel at Youngstown State.
